In May 2023, the WHO announced that COVID-19 was no longer a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern,” which characterizes the initial phase of a pandemic. However, the WHO has never ended the pandemic, and has repeatedly cautioned not to speak of COVID-19 in the past tense. It stated on December 31, 2024 that “the global public health risk associated with COVID-19 remains high”. - World Health Network
No, COVID is not over
At Libre Digital, we believe that as an organisation we can play our part to promote better standards, both organisationally and culturally – firstly by acknowledging how COVID disproportionately impacts the most marginalised people in our society, and secondly by changing our business practices to ensure we contribute to this impact as little as possible.
We recognise that COVID is a full-body disease that damages our brains, hearts, blood vessels, lungs, and immune systems, with each infection carrying around a 1 in 10 risk of Long COVID, as one of the biggest mass-disabling events in our history. While they reduce hospitalisations and deaths, vaccines alone are not enough – they don't prevent Long COVID and we cannot develop vaccines fast enough to match the speed of viral mutation in billions of potential hosts – especially if we abandon the protections working to slow that spread down.
That's why we promote such methods as remote work, ventilation, testing, masking, and air filtration.
